EUROPEAN COACH CHARTER RULES

Important informations from the driving time and rest periods
According to regulation (EC) 561/2006:

The daily driving time shall not exceed nine hours. However, the daily driving time may be extended to at most 10 hours not more than twice during the week.
The maximum daily working time shall not exceed 15 hours within 24 hour period, in that case, if driver shall have taken a break of at least 3 hours contiguous within 15 hour period. If the minimum 3 hours rest is beyond possibility, the working time may be extended to at 13 hours. (Driver may stay on board at 13 hours from starting to arrival).
After a driving period of four and a half hours a driver shall take an uninterrupted break of not less than 45 minutes, unless he takes a rest period.
This break may be replaced by a break of at least 15 minutes followed by a break of at least 30 minutes each distributed over the period in such a way as to comply with the provisions of the previous paragraph.
In any two consecutive weeks a driver shall take at least two regular weekly rest periods, or one regular weekly rest period and one reduced weekly rest period of at least 24 hours. However, the reduction shall be compensated by an equivalent period of rest taken en bloc before the end of the third week following the week in question.
A weekly rest period shall start no later than at the end of six 24-hour periods from the end of the previous weekly rest period.
Any rest taken as compensation for a reduced weekly rest period shall be attached to another rest period of at least nine hours.
Where a driver chooses to do this, daily rest periods and reduced weekly rest periods away from base may be taken in a vehicle, as long as it has suitable sleeping facilities for each driver and the vehicle is stationary.
A weekly rest period that falls in two weeks may be counted in either week, but not in both.
In that case the programm is not allow to observe the above regulations, it is requires involvement of 2 drivers.
The maximum daily working time shall not exceed 21 hours within 24 hour period for 2 drivers.
* Please note the European Law for long distance coach drives: -Maximum 12 working hours in one day. -Maximum 9 driving hours in one day. -Minimum 12 consecutive hours’ rest in one day. -Night rest is 11 hours, which can be reduced to 9 hours, maximum 3 times a week. Police checks above regulations. If it’s not adhered, coach will be blocked & fine to be paid.

Legal working hours for Coach Drivers + Facilites
Please take a few minutes to read safety/legal instructions for your bus trip. It´s for your safety.
* Drivers rest time MUST be a minimum of 11 hours between periods of duty.
(Rest time between last transfer in the evening and first transfer in the morning/departure in the morning)
* After 6 days driver has to rest for 24hr. In case of trips longer than 6days driver has to be exchanged or bus has to stand still for 24hrs.
* Drivers are able to drive for a maximum of 9hours.
* The Maximum duration of continuous driving is 4 hours 30 mins after which a 45-minute break must be taken
or
* Several smaller breaks may be taken during a 4 hours 30mins-driving period
(i.e. 3x15 min. rests) one of which MUST be at the end of the driving period.
* The Driver has to switch the „Tacho“ on „Working time“ even if only attending to the vehicle and not necessarily driving.
* The Driver is obliged to wear his/her seat belt at all times. There is a fine of Euro 135,00 for any driver who does not do this.
* Individual passengers, including children, can also be fined Euro 135,00 for
non-compliance when their seats have belts fitted and they are not wearing them.
It seems probable, therefore, that in the case for school parties it would be the teacher who would be fined.
* The rules apply to both German coaches and vehicles from other countries.
* Driver/Party leaders are obliged to ensure that passengers are aware of their obligation to wear belts.
* If your group have upgraded to an Executive coach, the facilities will include a drinks/kitchen facility. Please ensure that driver/leader is in charge of this and that it is only used when coach is not in motion and that drivers/leaders instructions have to be followed at all times.
Executive Coaches
* Please inform your group members that the toilet provided on board will have a limited capacity and is suitable only for emergencies. Would you please ask your members to utilise the toilets available on your rest stops at service stations etc as much as possible. Once full the toilet can only be emptied at designated sites, which are limited.
